Bon ton: how to wear a hat at weddings.
Among the great “returns” of the 2020 ceremony fashion, there is the hat for both the bride and the guests. This accessory, so controversial and unique in its kind, brings with it years of history during which it has been able to keep its charm and elegance intact. The important thing is to know how to stick to the bon ton and wear it in the right way!
Until a few decades ago, the hat determined the status of the person who wore it and was the unique prerogative of wealthy people, from noblewomen to celebrities of cinema and music.
Over the years, its use has been widely cleared through customs and in the last period we have seen it return by right among the most popular accessories for weddings.
As anticipated, however, to wear the hat at weddings you have to follow very specific rules.
Let’s see them together!
From the moment you receive the participation, the bride and groom should tell you if theirs will be an “en chapeau” wedding (for which a hat is expected to be worn). If not, consult with them and ask if the bride’s mom will wear the hat.
In fact, according to etiquette, unless otherwise indicated by the spouses, the fact that the bride’s mother wears a hat for the wedding is a sort of pass and automatically authorizes the others invited to wear it in turn.
We now come to practical indications
The hat can be worn for weddings that take place during the warm months, in the open air, by 12 noon. This is because, despite its versatility, an accessory like the hat is more suited to daylight hours and situations where it becomes necessary.
If the wedding takes place in a church, the bon ton says that women must keep the hat on, while men must take it off and keep it turned so that the inside is not visible.
As for women, the hat must be worn until the end of the ceremony and can be removed during the banquet if it is annoying or bulky.
But how should it be worn?
The hat should be placed on the top of the head making sure that there is at least one centimeter of space to separate it from the eyebrows.

The bon ton advises women to insert a comb in their clutch if they decide to remove their hat, in order to keep their hairstyle in order. Furthermore, in my opinion, it can become an interesting starting point for the gift to be given to witnesses.
The hat must always be removed with the right hand, gently grasping it by the cap.

For photos, men are advised to remove their hat while women can keep it on, remembering to slightly tilt their face upwards to avoid shadows.
Will 2020 therefore be the year of the return of this accessory also for brides? Judging from what we saw during the Milan Bridal Week, we would say yes.
Dai cappelli in pizzo al classico a falda larga fino ad arrivare alla sfiziosa cuffietta, diventa un valido sostituto per tutte quelle spose dall’animo un po’ alternativo che non desiderano indossare il velo.
From lace hats to classic wide-brimmed hats up to the fancy bonnet, it becomes a valid substitute for all those brides with a slightly alternative soul who do not wish to wear a veil.
To conclude, I leave you a little curiosity: if you and your groom decide to wear a hat for your wedding and you want to add some ornaments, remember that in the case of the woman they must be placed on the right side, while the man will have to add them on the side left.

The reason? The left side is that of the heart and the tokens of love!
Until next time
